Here is a quiver of water facts, consumption, and waste, for your thoughts…

WATER FACTS AND INFORMATION

*Somewhere between 70 and 75 percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water.

*Only 3% of the earth’s water is actually fresh-water.

*The United States uses close to 400 million gallons of fresh water every day.

*The United States uses nearly 80 percent of its water for irrigation and thermoelectric power.

*The average person in the United States uses anywhere from 80-100 gallons of water per day.

*30% of the water consumed in daily use is from flushing toilets

*A single waterless urinal situated in a well-trafficked public restroom will save approx 30,000 gallons of water per year.  (Imagine outfitting an entire stadium with them)

*Waste from livestock, and the pesticides and fertilizers used to grow feed, are the number one non-point source of water pollution in North America.

*Almost 1/2 the water used in the U.S. each year goes to grow feed and provide drinking water for cattle and other livestock.

*It takes 29 gallons of water to produce a pound of tomatoes

*It takes 139 gallons to produce a pound of bread.

*It takes 2,454 gallons to produce a pound of beef.

DESTROYING THE RAIN FORESTS:

*To produce junk mail for 1 year uses 100 million trees and 28 Billion gallons of water

*Cattle-ranching is a primary cause of rain forest destruction in Central and South America.

*Since 1960, more than 25 percent of the forests of Central America have been cleared to crate pasture-land for grazing cattle.

*While some fast food chains claim they no longer use Central American beef, for every quarter pound of hamburger still being exported from this region, 55 square feet of rain forest is destroyed.
